Grand opening. The virgin post.

First Go at Stamping.
Got my first stamping plates. Tore through the packaging. Stamped. Had to immortalise my first attempt.

Had my nails painted gold (Inglot 42), hence the base. Stamped with Inglot 112, not opaque, because it's not a stamping polish, but we'll get to that ;)

Hi. Nice to meet you, I’m Catherine.

Welcome to my Cave of Creativity.

So dramatic. (The title of this post, the cave, it all makes me think of vestal virgins and ancient rites and marble temples aaand… Ok, I’m back.)

How was this blog born? It all started super simple. I sat down. Actually, I laid down, with my right foot elevated, and my fifth metatarsal very broken. But I had some time to think.

The last straw that broke the camel's... well, foot in this case and pushed me into the welcoming arms of nail stamping.

The last straw that broke the camel’s… well, foot in this case and pushed me into the welcoming arms of nail stamping.

Turns out, there is not that many hobbies in this world that I actually enjoy.

Books. Good ones make me happy, crappy ones make me grumpy (mostly because I need to finish them even if they suck. OCD.)

Words. They are awesome. They’re like supercharged fairy dust.

Talented writers. The above description of words would make writers… fairies. We’ll go with that.

Writing myself. And then finding whatever it is I wrote weeks later. Time travelling to a specific feeling and flavour of a moment.

Cooking. Truthfully, feeding people is what I like. Reading about people’s dishes. Foodporn.

There’s probably a few more, but my painkillers knocked me out and you can’t get to know me in just a few paragraphs. (There goes hoping I’m a complex creature… ; ))

Also, I’m not sufficiently self-actualised to just name all the things that bring me joy off the bat. Tough.

And then, I like me some simple esthetic fun.

Inglot white pearl base (900) and stamping with a super old (9 years at least) red Sensique polish, thick and so stamped quite well. Thumb, accent, all red.

Second Attempt.

Confession. I never thought of myself as a girly girl, and one that does makeup well. I can’t draw. Like at all. I write, true. But if you tell me to scrapbook or decoupage or collage, I run. I run far and hide. I probably can’t do it, but even more so, I have no interest in it. My best friend can spend hours and hours, covered in glue and scraps of paper and feathers and beads and gods knows what. That’s her creative outlet.

My claws are mine.

And I want this blog to be my journal, a journal of how I make things pretty and how they make me happy. Because pretty is one of life’s simplest pleasures. And we all have 10 canvas that are just waiting for some pretty to brighten (or darken :)) our day.

All Inglot polishes, none of them stamps well, not opaque enough, but practicing with what I have at home.

Third Attempt.

This wasn't strictly a mani, messing around with the plates, in preparation for the fourth attempt.

Fourth Attempt.
This wasn’t strictly a mani, messing around with the plates, in preparation for the fourth attempt. I never thought I’d be a person doing anything ‘in preparation’ for a manicure design.

Since I’ve started following the nail blogging community it sort of dawned on me how much better my painting an decorating my nails would be if I could share it with people who are interested in the same thing.

OK. This is my very first, virgin post. So I’ll stop at that and spare you the full story of my nails through a catholic boarding school (my nails still cringe when they think about it), biting (I’m still trying to make it up to them) and uni, if you ever want to know what they went through and sympathise, let me know.

But now, some nailporn. There will be aplenty at this address :)

Yes, your eyes don't deceive you, there's a kiwi.

Fifth Attempt and a Kiwi.
Yes, your eyes don’t deceive you, there’s a kiwi. But also, there’s a new Sally Hansen from Poundland (have you ever tried roaming through a Poundland with two crutches and a cast?) Xtreme Wear in Wet Cement that’s gorgeous and stamps quite well, even on a blue Miss Sporty (ring finger). The rest are Inglots.

My first ever Sally Hansen (Insta Dri Coco a-go-go, in love) on an Inglot (986) base. The green base is my ultimate favourite polish prestamping and I can't wait to try it with a black stamping polish when and if I get one.

Sixth Attempt (not that I’m counting).
My first ever Sally Hansen (Insta Dri Coco a-go-go, in love) on an Inglot (986) base. The green base is my ultimate favourite polish prestamping and I can’t wait to try it with a black stamping polish when and if I get one. The abused cuticle of my ring finger needed some cheering up, hence the fruit cocktail. Thoughts?

I mean, really. These are the cutest bubbles, from my first ever Cheeky plate (CH26) - stamp really well, especially compared to my beginner stamping plates, cheap ones from eBay (hey, I had to try and find out whether I was even capable of STAMPING - it seemed super hard and manually challenging.)

I feel like I’ve gone up a level in pampering my nails when I fell in love with stamping. That was a week ago. (I’ve been thinking about stamping for a while, so many talented bloggers out there tortured me with pretty, pretty stamped nails, but I finally got to it when I broke my foot. Yes.)

So, even though I’m super self conscious about it, there go my first stamping attempts, for your viewing pleasure.

The stamping on the golden base is, following the title, the virgin stamping. I’m posting every attempt, even those really… well. Honestly, it’s a learning curve.

Enjoy, give feedback if you feel like it and most importantly – be inspired !

(even if only to strive for BETTER then my first stamping attempts ; ))

Oooooompf. Deep breath. Post.

  5. First of all, FANTASTIC stamping for a first attempt!! I love it all!
Except for the writing part – I completely suck at writing and you, clearly, are an excellant writer – we are so similar. I don’t think I have a creative bone in my body. I couldn’t scrapbook if my life depended on it and don’t even mention any of the other crafty hobbies some of my friends are into. Luckily I found my nails and even though I might not be brilliant I do love it.

Looking forward to more posts. Hope you heal up well! xx

    • Awwww, thank you!!!
I’m so glad we’ve found each other then ;))
I love your designs and one definitely can’t tell you’re not into crafts and beads and feathers and glue (that is literally what flashes through my mind when I think about crafty hobbies..) judging by your nails. But I always think that being creative with our nails is more practical – you wear them every day all the time. I mean, you can’t get more practical than that :D
And you ARE brilliant at it, the Batman mani you did was super awesome, and I don’t even LIKE Batman, your gradients are incredible every time and I couldn’t stop staring at the drippy nails :D All in all, your creations are a sight to admire, quite addictive, actually… ;))
      Thank you!

    • Thank you kindly :)
Awwww, thanks! And thanks for commenting about that theme too, I was anxious about it, but I love the turquoise shades and I just wanted not pink to be honest ;)
Take care, I’m still going through your snackistan of a blog and still loving it!

    • Thanks! :) I’ve actually been following the Nail Art Ideas Linkup for a while, and I would love to join ! It does seem technologically daunting though, I so don’t know how to add a link or how would I add the October 2013 graphic with all the themes to my post… But I’m totally obsessing over ‘Things That Go Bump in the Night’ :)) Thank you for the comment!

      • you can go ahead and try clicking the blue man inlinkz guy right now- you’ll see it’s easy. to add your inlinkz you only need three pieces of info: your name, the url of your post that contains the pic, and your email address. when you enter that stuff in, then the pics from your post pop up and you have to select which pic you want displayed as the thumbnail.

as far as entering the graphic, you can right click on my graphic and save the pic to your pc. then just ‘add media’ to add the pic to your account so you can enter it in any of your posts whenever you want. :)

    • Thank you! But you can do feathered nails, which is awesome. And I loved that fruity green mani you did ;) Before I stamped for the first time I fully expected to be uncoordinated and suck at it completely, but it is SO. MUCH. FUN. I’m waiting for some plates now, because I only have cheap-o ones I bought to figure out if I was manually able to stamp, so so so excited for the new plates :) Awwww, ‘it hates you’ ;)) But you are using konad special polish, right, I seem to remember it from a paisley mani or something and what brand plates are you using? I’m just asking, cause I’m wondering why you have issues. Thank you for commenting!

  6. First off, you’re am amazing stamper!!! Like, I’m super jelly write now. It’s a little insane.
Secondly, I love your writing. You put so much voice into it, and I looove it. In your intro thingy, you talked about wanting to inspire others, and I must say, your writing inspires me to inject more of my own humor and voice into my work.
Thirdly, your theme is so flippin cute!!
So, I guess that sums up all I wanted to say…

    • Oh wow, you totally made my day! (And I’m immobilised with a broken foot, so that saying something ; )) I’m so glad you like it! We’re sort of at the same beginner stage in stamping so I hope we can stamp through it together ; )
Ugh, I was so self conscious about posting these, thanks for the compliment!
Yes!!! Inspiration! You are my first comment and I officially love you for it ; )
Yeah, I didn’t want something too serious, and NOTHING with flowers and/or pink so. If I was a computer programmer or could understand these things better, there’d be a cat running around my blog, trying to catch little digital fishies :P But I’m not, so the cat is imaginary. :)
But I spent quite a while on picking it out , so thank you for noticing :)
      Take care!!!
